A religion of peace

Best line of the Islamic cartoon affair, by Wellington Dominion Post editor Tim Pankhurst:

"'If we allow Christianity and more particularly the Catholic Church and the Pope to be satirised, and we do, should Islam be treated differently?

'In its pure form Islam is a religion based on peace and tolerance. This is a test of that tolerance.'"

Islam and Tolerance? I'm not sure I believe this. I have a very difficult time believing that Mohammed can be considered tolerant and peaceful. Brilliant perhaps. He did afterall conquer a vast area and create an Islamic empire (conveniently forgotten when politically correct folks talk about the Crusades), the choice for conquered peoples was often pay, convert or die (still the case today in some places I think). The Koran seems to have an awful lot of violent references that are brought up all the time by Clerics in the middle east (or are they just making stuff up?). Certainly there are few places in the world were one can view this tolerant Islam at work, most places are full of virulent anti-Semitism, anti-Americanism and anti-Westernism.
Simply put I see so little of this tolerant Islam I find it difficult to believe it exists. For example I have a friend from Iraq (now here in Canada) who left primarily because he was not a Muslim and was discriminated against on a regular basis (he left, escaped at great risk to himself and his family, prior to the war). He has seen much of this first hand (in Indononsia too) and refers to Muslims as crazy people (keep in mind that is not all of them).
